SVA’s Unique and Time-Tested Students-in-Community Program

My SVA experience gave me confidence to be successful in my business career, and also taught me compassion and caring for others.   —Sheila ’75

Every SVA student participates in the Students-in-Community (SIC) program annually. SIC, begun in the early 1970s,  plays a critical role in shaping students’ spirituality and appreciation of the importance of individual commitment to community. This service learning experience also introduces students to a range of career options in the service professions.

Junior and senior students volunteer during school hours at a wide range of local nonprofit organizations, including schools, hospitals, daycare centers, nursing homes, advocacy groups and multi-purpose community agencies.

Younger students organize school-based events that annually serve a specific group, such as young children, the elderly or handicapped individuals.

The SIC experience plants the seeds of Christian service and social involvement while also helping
students to clarify their own educational and career goals.
